Social Media Training
for Local Government
Ensure that your councillors avoid making mistakes, inappropriate comments, and controversial posts on social media.
Course Details
All councillors need to understand how to use social media responsibly, effectively, and in line with their role as elected members.
This Social Media training is designed to give councillors the confidence, skills, and understanding they need to use social media responsibly, effectively. We provide practical guidance on how to communicate clearly and professionally online, manage public engagement, and deal with challenging situations such as criticism, misinformation, and online abuse.
We can deliver this as a half day seminar for up to 12 people or a full day workshop with tailored, practical exercises
What to expect
We cover the key principles of councillor conduct on social media, including the distinction between personal and official use, understanding when posts may be considered “in role”, and how codes of conduct, data protection, and equality duties apply online. Councillors will also explore good practice for content creation, tone and language, accessibility, and engaging constructively with residents.
By the end of the training, your councillors will have a stronger understanding of both the opportunities and risks of social media, and feel better equipped to use digital platforms in a way that supports their democratic role, protects their reputation, and maintains public confidence.
We send out pre course questionnaires to help us tailor the training so that you get exactly what you need from the day.
