Managing communications across regions and service areas presents an enormous challenge to even the most experienced PR professional, combine this with the fact the many of you are working either on your own or with just a part time assistant and suddenly this challenge may seem insurmountable. This was a theme that was common, not just in the breakout sessions of this year's conference, but also with almost everyone I spoke to. We have heard so many tales of woe, from the missed photo opportunities, the architectural awards that the press office heard about after the presentation, and the amazing tenant stories that should have hit the local press, but weren't recognised as newsworthy. How can you raise media awareness across your organisation? Once you've raised the awareness, how do you handle the subsequent bombardment of "potential" news stories from your now enthusiastic colleagues? It's a challenge that Media Friendly has worked on with Housing Associations around the country, and we'll share our secret with you. No one can expect one person to manage regional news stories from the head office and RSLs rarely have the budget for a PRO in every location. But why not empower your Heads of Service with the skills needed to spot the news value of the work that they do?
If you can't afford an extra pair of hands, at least you can have extra eyes and ears, people that understand the need for good media relations and the importance of feeding back information to you in a timely fashion.
