Use the media to raise your profile

This media training course is designed specifically for senior academics, research staff, Deans and Associate Deans in small groups across all the schools.

The full day media training course is designed to help academic staff promote their current research more effectively through local and regional media in order to raise the profile and promote the university more effectively.

We will

• Encourage participants to see the value and benefits of talking to the media – especially in a proactive way to promote your University.
• To give participants confidence and media skills when handling media interviews.

These Workshops will help you emphasise the positive messages coming from the University, and minimise the impact of negative news, although we cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend the media are always going to be friendly towards your University.

Each Workshop will start with a presentation of the basics of what is newsworthy and how to be proactive.

We will include:

• Aims and objectives of media training.
• The basics of what is newsworthy and how to present this.
• What is news? What does the media want from a story?
• Identifying potential success stories within The University of Kent.
• How to be proactive and promote the activities of your university.
• How to handle a Crisis driven media enquiry and interview.
• General rules for interviews - how to handle a media enquiry.
• Preparation for interviews.
• Strategy and tactics - including key messaging.
• Print, Radio and TV interview techniques.
• Down the line, OB, telephone interviews, doorstepping, panel i/v's.
• Using your voice and how to present yourself visually.
• Do's and don'ts.
• Practical session including three individual interviews per participant per day - print, radio and TV.
