Media Law - How Confident are you?

Media Law can be a minefield - Let us lead you through it.

Journalists have to study media law as part of their training, but there is no such requirement for PR Officers and Communications Departments.

So how do Press Officers deal with all sorts of complex issues around election law, use of photos, use of CCTV footage, naming and shaming …?

With the Local Elections on June 4th nearly upon us and with differing interpretations of what can and can't be done during electoral "Purdah", we have been contacted by several councils asking us for Media Law training courses.

Our training course covers:

  • Election Law - is it different for print and broadcast?
  • Election Law - what can councils do? What can Members say?
  • Privilege - Absolute and Qualified - what Members should know about what the media report on their utterances at Council meetings.
  • Copyright.
  • Use of photos.
  • Use of CCTV footage.
  • Contemporaneous reports - how much later can you use material from courts or council meetings?
  • Court Reporting - Contempt of Court, Magistrates Court Act.
  • Data Protection.
  • Libel.

We deliver the only essentials - only what you need to know to run your Press Office or Communications Team, confident in the knowledge that you understand the legal requirements and that what you are putting out will not cause you a problem.

We tailor the training to your own issues. We recommend including Crisis Management training as part of this course as this helps to put the media law into context.
